COMPETING IN A TRANSFORMING ECONOMY
Over the past year, consumer CPG purchase behavior has taken a turn down but then back up in the latest quarter. Dollar sales growth reflects the impact of product inflation at retail. But unit sales declines present a more telling story of weakened shopper behavior. Both, however, are on the rise as recent gas price spikes prompt consumers to reduce restaurant spending and eat in more often.

The study shows that shifts in consumer shopping and purchase behavior vary widely by income levels, presence of children and life stage. A common theme is that consumers are increasing purchases of basic ingredients and meal components due to reduced restaurant spending. Also, shoppers have decreased purchases of “non-essentials” across all departments and increased purchases of private label in key, must-have categories.
